The college is slated to be one of the nation's leading centers for research, teaching and outreach on such environmental issues as species protection, preservation of natural resources, urban design and development, and global climate change.

"The heart of the college", says Crowley," will be the Academy of Environmental Design--the administrative home for the college’s faculty. All UGA faculty members who have a professional interest and needed skills in various environmental issues will be eligible to be in the academy regardless of their academic discipline. In addition to scientists in such areas as botany, biology, forestry, ecology, soil science and marine science, the academy could include professors in landscape architecture, business, sociology, law, journalism and other non-science areas and private industry."

Members of the academy will continue to work in their home departments. As faculty in the academy, they will also coordinate and offer courses, degree programs and certificate programs in environmental areas not covered in existing units.

Our mission is to research, teach and communicate new and existing knowledge about the built and natural environment to promote innovative planning, preservation, protection, restoration and responsible development of natural and cultural resources.

This program is focused on training in the natural and human environment, as well as the integration of natural and socioeconomic systems. Students address specially selected research topics, which are amenable to a two-year training activity, which require that they learn research design, special skills, analysis and interpretation of ecological/environmental data and set their results into the context of ecological and human ecology. Facilities of the Institute of Ecology in Athens, and at off-campus facilities such as the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, the University of Georgia Marine Institute and other sites in the state (mountains, coastal plains, wetlands, lakes and rivers, coast and sea), and international sites such as Maquipunca Reserve in Ecuador and the Ecolodge San Luis in Costa Rica, provide students unusual opportunities for ecological training. The program has attracted outstanding students and produced exceptionally talented ecological scientists, many of whom are now leaders in the field. Applicants are responsible for submitting all materials required for admission. Materials submitted directly to the graduate school are: the general application for admission, the application processing fee, two official transcripts from each institution attended and G.R.E. scores. Three letters of recommendation, background and interest form, statement of purpose, and curriculum vitae must be forwarded to the program office. The Institute of Ecology accepts applicants into degree-seeking programs only for the Fall Semester of each academic year. All applicant credentials are due in the program office no later than January 1, of each academic year.
