The mission of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences is to advance the well-being of individuals and families over their life span and strengthen communities through the generation and dissemination of knowledge, education of professionals, and provision of research-based programs.

The mission of the department is to: Create undergraduate curricula that are educationally sound, and that build on the liberal arts basis of the University of Georgia core curriculum.

Build on the core curriculum, educate undergraduate students in their professional area, and provide them with the base of knowledge that will allow them well-qualified entry into the work force.

Educate graduate students to seek and assimilate research knowledge in their professional area, and to conduct original, meaningful research.

Conduct research that has an impact in both basic and applied areas of knowledge; ensure that the results of this research are made known in an effective way to academia, and to business and industry.

Interact with business and industry to assist them in solving problems; provide for the transfer of technology and research results to outside users.

The Ph.D. program in textile sciences is for individuals who wish to pursue research in textile science at the frontier of the discipline. Students initiate and conduct research related to the theory and application of physical, chemical, and environmental principles influencing properties of textile products. One of three major areas is selected for emphasis: textile chemical processes, textile analysis, or textile products and standards. The program includes 30 hours of coursework in the major area, 9-12 hours in a supporting area such as chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, or environmental sciences. plus courses in statistics and research methods. A dissertation is an integral component of the program. Recent graduates from our Ph.D. program hold a variety of positions in industry and academia.

The Ph.D. emphasis in International Merchandising provides opportunities for concentrated study international apparel and textiles retailing, international production and trade, global sourcing, international business practices, and e-commerce in a global setting.
