The Social Studies Education Program offers two Masters degree programs. The Master of Education degree (MEd) is for individuals who already hold a teaching certificate in social studies education. The Master of Arts in Teaching in Social Studies Education (MAT) is for individuals who wish to gain initial certification along with earning a Masters degree.

The MAT in Social Studies Education program consists of 57 credit hours. The program may be completed in either part-time or full-time study and does not involve cohort study. Required courses are offered only at the Athens campus. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a minimum 2.8 undergraduate GPA, a GRE score of at least 850, with a minimum score of 400 on each of the verbal and quantitative subtests, or a Miller Analogies Test score of at least 402. Applications are due by December 1. | ||
