Recreation and Leisure Studies at the University of Georgia will be known for outstanding scholarship, leadership, and educational excellence in the areas of recreation administration, experienced based education, and the scholarly study of leisure. To that end faculty and students address the design, provision, and evaluation of recreation and leisure services that facilitate health, education, and well-being across the lifespan, and study the psychological and social dimensions of leisure. It is our belief that recreational contexts can foster positive growth and development, engage citizens in their communities, and promote understanding and respect for diversity.

The Masters program requires a minimum of 37 semester credit hours. Students entering the Masters program are expected to have some background in recreation and leisure studies or work experience in this field; students without that background may be required to take additional classes to compensate for that deficiency. Well-prepared students who pursue their degrees on a full time basis should be able to finish an M.Ed. in three semesters, though taking four semesters is not unusual. Students pursuing an M.A. should allow extra time for thesis research.

The core set of classes is the same for all masters students and includes leisure theory, research methods and statistics, and recreation administration. In addition, masters students take additional classes to support their specific area of focus in therapeutic recreation, leisure service administration, or recreation resource management. Students select supportive classes from departments throughout campus. The Graduate School does not allow the transfer of courses taken prior to entering a graduate program on campus; however, once a student has entered UGA a minimal number of credits can be taken at another university and transferred in.

Students working toward a M.Ed. must pass a comprehensive written exam based on core Department coursework. Students working toward an M.A. must undertake and successfully defend a thesis research project. All courses must be completed within six years from the first term of enrollment.

Graduate students at the University of Georgia can pursue additional coursework to obtain graduate certificates from Women's Studies, Gerontology, Environmental Ethics, GIS, Conservation Ecology, Qualitative Inquiry, and other interdisciplinary graduate programs on campus.
