Ugas Get the Last Word…
BOW to convention and you miss the WOW factor. Lest we take ourselves too seriously, Carmen Mirandawg reminds us that Bulldogs are famously good-humored and good-hearted. In 2003, Athens-Oconee Junior Woman’s Club members Linda Ford (BS, ’81; MS, ’83) and Julie Walters initiated “We Let the Dogs Out” in response to the highly successful CowParade charitable project initiated in Europe. They planned for the colorful fiberglass statues to remain in place three years, but their effort was so successful there was immediate discussion of a permanent exhibition and a book project. An LA Times travel writer even gave the whimsical dawgs some ink.

A number of charities benefited from the sponsorship and sale of replicas of the originals. Today, nearly 40 different Uga statues, including this colorful example at Slippers on Lumpkin Street, stand at retail establishments and even an airport.
